(ROME) -- Going to bat for Christ just took on new meaning, with word out that the Vatican will soon launch its very own cricket team.
The headquarters of the Catholic church in Rome has put out the call to priests and seminarians -- and nuns for a separate female league -- to go for bat and bull for Team Holy See.
The brainchild of the scheme is Australian envoy to the Vatican and cricket enthusiast John McCarthy. He says he hopes to draw in Catholics by holding games across the English-speaking world where the sport is hugely popular. McCarthy says he hopes Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus will join the league, too.
The Vatican will announce details next week.
